Appearance and Smell

Anorexia Nervosa is considered a mental disorder. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5^th Edition, anorexia nervosa is classified under Eating and Feeding Disorders. There are two types, the first is binge/purge where the subject binges on large amounts of food, then regurgitate it, and the restricting type, where food is restricted and other methods such as laxatives abuse are instituted in order to expel calories before they can be absorbed. The goal of these unhealthy practices is tied to an altered perception of weight and body fat and the desire to be super thin. This can cause or be comorbid with anxiety and depression. The causes can be environmental, genetic, and/or psychological. Though it is considered a mental disorder, the physical component, weight loss, is predominant and of greatest concern. The typical treatment has the goal of re-feeding and weight gain. Researchers noticed that the wasting in cancer patients was similar, as is the lack of appetite which can occur or the fight against appetite in order to avoid pain. Therefore, it is likely that medical marijuana might be useful in helping patients with Anorexia Nervosa. One of the first investigations was done on a synthetic cannabinoid called dronabinol. In a study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders in 2014 patients with anorexia nervosa received either 2.5 mg of dronabinol twice per day for a total of four weeks or they received an inert placebo. The study found that dronabinol use reliably predicted weight gain associated with recovery (Andries, et al., 2014).

The earliest use of medical marijuana for Anorexia Nervosa that we have found in our research was done in 1983 and it was published in The Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology (Gross, et al., 1983). The results were not supportive of the use of medical marijuana; however, the study is of poor quality. There were only 11 study subjects and it was done at a time where marijuana was being demonized. 3 patients experienced panic, which suggests a lack of proper dose control and giving of the proper strain. Much less was known about medical marijuana at the time. It is well-known that if you dose incorrectly, you can get side effects. This is the case with any medication whatsoever. Therefore, we have to discredit this study, but it does provide a useful warning. If you dose the wrong strain improperly, you can get the side effects of panic and dysphoria. A patient with Anorexia Nervosa might want to start with a high CBD, low THC strain like Harelquin.
